I was planning to go to a 10 day silent meditation retreat in the beginning of March 2020, and then of course covid got real. It was early enough that it would have been borderline socially acceptable to go to the retreat anyway, but my ego leapt at the chance to Create Art and skip out on the whole thing about 10 days of silently witnessing my cosmic insignificance.
At the time, I was living in Seattle and me and a guy I met at a party were actively, albeit cautiously, forming an Adult Male Friendship, taking our dogs to the dog park at the same time, playing in a regular poker game, and even one time successfully planning a couples bonfire at the beach.
He had offered to let me stay at his family's cabin on Flathead Lake in Montana, if ever I were interested, and with 2 weeks off of work and that meditation retreat successfully shirked, I took him up on it.
At this point in time, I'd been playing regularly with Eric and Julian (as Half Woke Cowboys) and I was feeling very fertile and unapologetic about writing and playing my songs. These 3 songs were recorded at this cabin, Napoleon and Landscape being written there as well.
Me and this Adult Male Friend actually never saw each other again, as me and my partner stayed quite locked down for a year and then moved across the country. You never know when people will come in and out of your life. I'm grateful we met though, and grateful that he and his family so graciously let me stay at their cabin, record, watch logs burn, and listen to downloaded episodes of 2 Dope Queens when I'd get scared at night.
